It is an artificially created lake that was meant to solve the water shortage problems in Dallas in the early 1900s. It was commissioned in 1910 and it was finished being built in 1911.
In the interim year between then and now, approximately around the year 1950, the lake and its surroundings began to deteriorate due to neglect. But recently, there has been a new surge and enthusiasm to restore the lake to its former glory. The fact that the residential areas around it have become some of the best places to live in around Dallas should say something about the popularity of the lake.

There's a lot to do around the lake and it is not limited to just chilling out. There are various groups doing different things around the lake all the time.
