Katy Trail

The "Katy Trail" of Dallas is located along the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad, or "MKT". Nowadays, the Katy trail is used for inline skating, hiking or bicycling, making it a symbol for environmental and energy conservation throughout the city of Dallas.

The Katy Trail opened in 2000, and quickly became an excellent alternative to the busy street traffic along the road below it. Its smooth concrete surface is 12.5 feet wide, making it very friendly for inline skaters. Joggers may find the hilly terrain somewhat hard on the joints, but for cyclists and skaters the Katy Trail provides an opportunity for the perfect workout.

Amenities such as benches and bathroom facilities are slowly being added along the length of the Katy Trail - this is an endeavor where the "Friends of the Katy Trail" have taken an enormous initiative. The Friends of the Katy Trail also run a 5K for fundraising every spring, and the money collected is used to provide lighting, seating and other facilities all along the Katy Trail.

The efforts of Dallas residents have combined to make the Katy Trail a pleasant place to enjoy a relaxing bike ride or walk in. There are separate lanes for bikers and walkers, which prevent collisions as well as allow for soft surfaces for the latter and hard concrete for the former's convenience. The greenery surrounding the Katy Trail, as well as its elevated height, combine to offer a refreshing and new perspective on sights that people who travel in Dallas, TX drive past on a regular basis.

The Dallas TX travel guides mention the Katy Trail as the ideal place to go for a quiet stroll in the morning or evening. With policemen constantly on patrol, it is a safe walk even for teenagers or young people not native to the area.
