Be the First to Know: Intro to the Dallas Morning News
One of the leading dailies in the Dallas region is The Dallas Morning News. With over 26,000 subscribers, it is ranked among the top 20 newspapers in the country. It is also one of the oldest newspapers in Dallas, founded in the year 1885. It started off as a satellite newspaper of the Galveston Daily News, a leading newspaper of Texas belonging to the A. H. Belo Corporation. In the initial days, the newspaper had limited circulation but grew stronger over the years with strong financial support.
In the 1980s, the newspaper was charged for corrupted practices, mainly for blowing up its circulation numbers in order to keep its advertiser revenue ringing. It was then that the Times Herald, its rival, filed a suit against the newspaper in the court, which became a big hue and cry in the media circle as well as in public. Soon after, the newspaper organization was caught in the midst of another controversy, when it had to layoff over 150 workers after its parent company suffered a huge financial setback.
However, things started improving since 1990s and today the organization has the credit of wining numerous awards from prestigious groups such as Pulitzer, Overseas Press Club Award and George Polk Award, among others. It became the undisputed leader in the market after the Belo Corporation acquired the Times Herald for a huge sum, thereafter closing the paper immediately. It has won several appreciations for reporting, especially in the areas of breaking regional news, education, business, sports, photography and editorial. Today the parent company as well as The Dallas Morning News organization is both headquartered in the Downtown district of Dallas.
