This, as also the 52 other similar locomotives, has been made possible by a $75-million grant by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. An article in the Dallas Morning News has said that the grant accounted for almost three-fourths of the cost of the Union Pacific Corp's 98 new trains; in other words, each train cost about one million dollars. If the money came from taxpayers who in 1988 had voted against light rail service, it was because it bade fair to ensure that the quality of air in Texas remained pure.

The uniqueness of Dallas may well lie in that it is probably the only one anywhere that has a train service for a charitable purpose: More than 35 trains go round America every year; that would not be a big deal were it not for the fact that the Trains at NorthPark, sponsored by the Bank of Texas, raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas which takes care of parents and children visiting Dallas hospitals for treatment of various diseases.
